Distributed Interactive Virtual Surgery System

We introduce a distributed virtual surgery system for knee surgery study and planning. In our virtual surgery system, a group of surgeons can study 3D patient-specific knee models and discuss knee problems in real time through interactive visualization and online chat. The 3D knee model includes visualizations of tibia, femur, and contact force at the knee joint, which are created according to the patient’s knee MRI and biomechanics. Patient’s relatives and medical students can be allowed to audit the diagnosis process online. Furthermore, surgeons can also collaboratively make virtual surgery operations, gain experience on the specific surgery process, and make the best operation plan before real operation on the patient. Here, we mainly discuss our research and implementation of the distributed interactive simulation.
